The race organisers decided early on to move the event again to Thisted on the Limfjord – a decision that was to pay off. Whilst the wave discipline is waiting for better conditions at the weekend, the flat-water venue offered ideal conditions for top-class slalom races. The race organisers made the most of the stable weather window and ran the heats without any significant breaks. Right up until late afternoon, the competitors completed one heat after another. In the end, four complete foil eliminations were completed, along with almost as many fin eliminations. Despite aching legs after the marathon on the water, the atmosphere in the paddock was lively.
Bonaire’s young talent dominates
Kit De Jong continues to dominate the U21 Girls’ Foil standings. The up-and-coming talent from Bonaire leads with a near-perfect score of 4.2 points from six ranked races out of a total of eight eliminations completed. She has seven wins to her name; only in elimination four did she have to settle for second place. Her sister, Long De Jong, follows in second place, some way behind, whilst Jessica Roman currently rounds off the podium.
Tycho Smits consolidated his lead in the U21 Boys’ Foil category with another solid day of competition. The 17-year-old from Bonaire, who also tops the overall Youth rankings, has won four of the nine elimination rounds held so far. He has only once dropped out of the top two. Gustav Permin moved up one place and is now in second position. The Dane benefited from two wins on the day and pushed Benedikt Emser down to third place. However, there are only 2.3 points separating Permin and Emser, which keeps the competition tight.
A close contest in the U17 division
Emil Krogh Schmidt retains the lead in the U17 Boys’ Foil category, but Mika Henning remains hot on his heels. The two athletes shared the day’s victories equally – Schmidt and Henning each secured two first-place finishes. The narrow points gap between the two rivals promises some thrilling races over the coming days of competition.
