The Cornish Cold Water Classics took place at Gwithian Beach in Cornwall at the weekend. The British wave contest, which starts during a ten-day standby period, was blessed with top-class conditions on the second weekend. Photographer John Carter was on hand.

"Insanity! What an epic few days in Cornwall. Congratulations to everyone for an event for the ages.... we'll be talking about it over a beer in a few years time, a real classic!!! Epic conditions, side-offshore, big waves, challenging, gritty and glorious all at the same time. I don't think I've swum this much in a long time. There are situations that you can't get out of, no matter how much talent you have, and you just have to take the knocks that come your way. But in between there were always magical moments, a few big, clean waves that you could edge the rail into and do a few turns, what fun!" writes the winner of the men's competition Phil Horrocks about the crazy contest.
