When normal people see a road sign warning of an uneven carriageway, they might think of their shock absorbers. Windsurfers, however, might think of the two hills ("danger sign 112") as small waves that could make an ideal jump - at least according to one or more unknown people in Essen. They stuck the pictogram of a windsurfer on the supposed waves on a bridge over the Ruhr, as reported by the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ):
Last week, however, the city of Essen removed the sign again. "As this is a criminal offence and constitutes an infringement of the road traffic regulations, the city had the sign removed immediately after learning about it," reads a statement from the city of Essen in response to an enquiry from surf. It is not known how long the "windsurfer edition" sign had been there.
The city of Essen would like to point out that sticking stickers on traffic signs is a criminal offence that can be punished with fines. As a rule, this fine is between 100 and 200 euros, but if the legibility or comprehensibility of the sign is impaired, the fine can be higher.
Unofficial signs with windsurfers can be bought in many surf shops, but of course these may only be erected on private property. There are also some strange signs at some spots:
