Daida Moreno ended her professional career in the summer after winning 18 world championship titles. She had been working on a documentary with filmmaker Pablo Ramirez for some time before that. After a short preview in spring, the 25-minute film "Daida - Back to the Ocean" is now finished. It can only be viewed online free of charge until Sunday 27 November:
Subtitles are available in English, German, Italian and French: Click on the settings icon (cogwheel at the bottom right), select "Subtitles" and set the language.
Daida was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011 and underwent an operation in 2012. The illness and its effects are the focus of the film, with motherhood at the end. The filmmakers show impressive shots with special angles to emphasise the story that Daida herself tells and partly re-enacts. All proceeds from the film will go to the Spanish Cancer Aid (AAEEC).
In the big surf interview to mark the end of her career, Daida said in the summer: "Having cancer at 33 and seeing the people around me dying from the disease was very hard. It helped me a lot to make my documentary film about how I went through that time and how windsurfing helped me through those tough times."
"Daida Ruano's personality and her career as a world record holder in sport are the ideal loudspeaker to give visibility to this aggressive disease," said Pablo Ramírez at the release of the first trailer on World Cancer Day in spring. The film has already been nominated for the Goya Award, the most important Spanish film prize.
"We want to reach everyone in our windsurfing family. May this message and Daida's personal story help every single person who is in trouble or struggling with anything else in life!" says Pablo Ramirez.
