Finally some real pressure on the North Sea again, and at midsummer! At this time of year, it is (theoretically) possible to be on the water for over 17 hours, as the sun only disappears just below the horizon in the north of Denmark. As the wind and wave forecast for the whole day promised pressure from the west and it was not just a local wind field, the day had to be well prepared to last until sunset.
The day before, we had a warm-up session in Nørre Vorupør, where the wingers had a clear advantage in the light wind. After this session, a heavy area of rain moved over North Jutland for several hours and dampened the mood a little, although we are actually used to that from our North German summer...
Precipitation is also a good thing in the region - keyword: mushrooms! However, our little yellow friends still need some time, so we went in search of food at the nearest supermarket. We thought carefully about what to eat the next day and when to eat it in order to last until the evening. All too often I made the mistake of not eating anything all day or eating far too much at once, so that the surfing day had to end early.
In the meantime, we've got this under control quite well and sometimes take an afternoon nap, although this can also become a trap if you lie down for too long. True to the motto: "If you rest, you rust", we had to make the most of the day. The plan: lots of short sessions and sitting behind the camera in between to stay active.
The plan worked out more or less well, and after many hours on the water we headed to the pier in Hanstholm for an evening session with the last of our strength. My strength waned after just 20 minutes, but the light was breathtakingly beautiful. So it wasn't so bad that I could only watch Steffi and Dominik ride the waves. Surprisingly, the wind picked up more and more in the evening, although you're actually used to the wind getting weaker when the sun is low. Both of them had left their small sails at home and were now completely overpowered. Fortunately, Steffi was able to borrow a 3.7 from a friend, whereas Dominik was really at his limit with a 4.0. This day will definitely go down in our "Hall of Fame" of very good surf days!
