Information from the WWT in Cloudbreak is still scarce, but the pictures speak for themselves: even on the final day, the Pacific was in full force, sending massive sets crashing onto the reef. A fitting backdrop for the final heats in a contest which, although ‘only’ a four-star event and therefore not a key part of the World Championship, is nonetheless the highlight of the wave season for many. Bernd Roediger, one of the top favourites, was crowned the winner in Fiji, standing out once again from an extremely high-calibre field in these conditions.
In the final, Roediger faced Antoine Martin, Morgan Noireaux and Camille Juban, some of the best and most stylish down-the-line specialists. And yet, in the end, Roediger finished more than two points ahead of Antoine Martin. Things were much closer in the semi-finals, where Juban came out on top, whilst Roediger only made it through to the final with a razor-thin lead of 0.14 points over Julian Salmonn. Salmonn, having recently switched to Goya, was thus one of the biggest surprises of the Fiji Surf Pro.
The winner of the most recent contest ahead of Cloudbreak in 2023, Baptiste Cloarec, came off second best in the second semi-final against Morgan Noireaux and Antoine Martin. Takuma Sugi was also eliminated, having previously knocked out veteran Robby Swift in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, Jaeger Stone was unable to compete following his injury the previous day.
