Racing in warm water, even in January: the GWA’s winter training sessions offer a chance to escape the winter
The German Windsurfing Association is organising a winter training camp in Soma Bay from 2 to 9 January 2027. Slalom and foil windsurfers of all ability levels can improve their technique with water temperatures above 20 degrees and professional coaching. The participation fee is 100 euros per participant.

In early January, Germany is covered in slush, whilst windsurfers in Soma Bay glide across crystal-clear turquoise waters. The German Windsurfing Association (GWA) is offering its members a winter training camp in Egypt from 2 to 9 January 2027. The training is aimed at foilers and fin slalom riders of all ability levels – from those new to regattas to top racers. With water and air temperatures above 20 degrees, participants can improve their starts, gybes and speed. The Surf Motion water sports centre serves as the base. Station operator Peter Müller is himself a very good racer and knows what matters. The training is led by an experienced coach who looks after the participants throughout the day. If there are a large number of bookings, several coaches may be deployed. The contribution of 100 euros is primarily intended as a nominal fee to ensure planning certainty. According to GWA, taking part is well worth it simply because of the savings on the airport shuttle and equipment storage.

Comprehensive support on the water

The programme offers an intensive and varied training programme from morning to evening, which, according to GWA, is specifically tailored to the individual development of each participant. The focus is on making the most of the time spent on the water. Video analysis enables targeted correction of mistakes and the tracking of progress. Tactics and technique sessions take place regardless of performance level. On-site, separate training groups can be formed for foiling and fin boats, as well as for different performance levels. A RIB from Surf Motion is used for training; if there are many bookings, several may be used. The boats are helmed by skippers from the centre, with the coach on board. Beginners can get to know the scene without the immediate pressure of regattas. A closing regatta will take place on 8 and 9 January, followed by a joint closing evening.

The costs of equipment storage during the training period will be covered by the GWA. Earlier or longer storage is possible and can be arranged on an individual basis with Surf Motion. The centre offers excellent racing hire equipment from Neil Pryde and Patrik, particularly in the fin slalom discipline. Participants do not necessarily have to bring everything with them and can manage a period without their own equipment, for example if their sponsor has not yet delivered it.

Flexible travel arrangements and accommodation

Participants will travel to Hurghada individually by plane. Condor, in particular, offers very favourable rates for surf equipment. The airport shuttle to and from the airport is organised and booked through Surf Motion. The costs for GWA members are covered by the GWA. Each participant is responsible for organising their own accommodation. We recommend the Palm Royale Resort, which is situated right next to the centre. It is possible to arrive earlier, for example over Christmas or New Year’s Eve. A later departure after 10 January is also an option.

For fellow travellers, the centre offers courses and the chance to hire windsurfing, wingfoil and kitesurfing equipment. When there’s no wind, there are various alternative activities on offer. A visit to the Valley of the Kings, a day trip to Hurghada or a snorkelling excursion are all possible. Other water sports such as kitesurfing, wingfoiling or stand-up paddleboarding can also be tried out.
