Something is brewing: Ciarán was one of the strongest storms to hit northern Europe this year. Wind speeds of up to 200 km/h were measured in northern France. The precursors were still navigable in the English Channel, but in view of what was brewing in the Atlantic, even the most hardened locals were later forced to cancel their sails.

After a hot summer, nature flexed its muscles just in time for the start of autumn. Numerous storms swept across Europe - and many windsurfers chased them. We show you the strongest pictures of the autumn season.

Storm Ciarán hit northern Europe at more than 200 km/h at the beginning of November - just ten days after the devastating storm surge on the Baltic Sea . But Ciaran came from the west and didn't have quite as dramatic an impact. From France to the Netherlands, windsurfers were out on the water, the best pictures of this and other autumn storms are shown in the gallery above!

Wind speeds of up to 200 km/h were measured in northern France, and Jules Denel came back early from the Aloha Classic to surf the storm at his home spot of Wissant. At the Dutch spot Domburg, the current was so strong that the surfers hardly felt like they were moving. It was a day of "battling the forces of nature" rather than a day of great moves.

The south of England also got its share of wind and turned a flat water spot into a wave paradise. And in Hanstholm, even seasoned pros like Leon Jamaer at the Danish Open resorted to the smallest of sails in order to have some control.

You can see the best storm pictures from these spots and other Big Days in Sweden, on the Rhine, in St. Peter-Ording and elsewhere in the gallery above!
