The Formula Foil World Championship returned to the Circolo Surf Torbole on Lake Garda, where it was held last year. 25 races were held over the five days of the event, with a total of 63 starters from 14 countries, including one participant from Argentina. Several juniors born in 2010 were the youngest to start, while the oldest participant was Hugo Stamm from Switzerland, born in 1949.
The Swiss rider Elia Colombo was right at the front from the start and did not let himself be displaced from the top spot until the end. He is riding on Patrik equipment, which has already performed excellently in the World Cup this year. He was followed by Jacopo Renna, the owner of Circolo Surf Torbole and the quasi host of the World Cup. Tomasz Romanowski from Poland came third. The two German starters Robert Bircheneder and Max Winkler came 28th and 33rd.
Five women also took part in the World Championships, with sisters Helle and Tura Oppedal from Norway leading the way. Helle Oppedal, who is also battling for a starting place for the Olympics on the iQFoil, left the majority of the men's field behind her in the overall standings and finished in 12th place.
A new feature of the Formula Foil is the "Foil Race 1" classification, in which only one set may be registered. This also makes the regatta interesting for many iQFoilers, whose 95-centimetre-wide boards otherwise have disadvantages compared to the ten-centimetre-wide boards that are permitted in Formula Foil, as well as the larger selection of foil components. For 2024, the maximum width for newly registered boards will then be completely reduced to 95 centimetres.
