Lisa Kloster wins the FPT Cape Town Women's Double Elimination, beating Heidi Jabbari in the final, who had fought her way up to second place. After the first round ("Single Elimination") was held on the Rietvlej just outside Cape Town (HERE you can read the report), the double started at the wavespot Paternoster, around two hours north of the metropolis.
As there were no suitable conditions in sight in Cape Town, the decision was made to take a road trip north. A two-hour drive to Paternoster Beach promised plenty of wind and good waves. The first spot update in the morning looked promising, with wind and waves slowly building up. After a front came through with a bit of rain, it was a case of waiting. It quickly became clear that, unlike the single elimination a few days earlier, there would be no nuclear winds on the programme. The double elimination, also known as the comeback round, offers the riders the opportunity to improve their position from the preliminary round and ideally work their way forwards lap by lap. If you have the necessary skill and stamina, you can theoretically still make it to the top after finishing last in the single!
The competition started as soon as the first competition-ready gusts arrived. Lisa Kloster decided to also compete in the men's event in order to qualify for the women's double elimination. She beat Heidi Jabbari and Victor Landau and was only eliminated by Adam Sims (JP/Sailloft), who produced a clean pasko. Due to the light wind, the light riders generally coped better with the conditions, and Felix Volkhardt also benefited from this, fighting his way up to 6th place and only losing out to Sam Esteve.
Esteve, on the other hand, was up against Lennart Neubauer, who had previously finished third, in the duel for the podium. The German-Greek Neubauer got to grips with the competition conditions better and better as the day progressed, with the reigning 2023 EFPT Champion producing impressive moves in the light wind and filling his scorecard with burner 360s and spock culos. Esteve, on the other hand, was visibly struggling to keep up with the pace. Unfortunately, there was no duel between Neubauer and Niclas Nebelung, the runner-up in the preliminary round, as Nebelung was unable to compete in the double - Neubauer therefore moved up to second place without a fight. The fact that he didn't move up any further was due to the decreasing wind, which died down completely just in time for the final. The first event of the Freestyle Pro Tour once again had a wide variety of conditions to offer: A single elimination in flat water and 30 knots as well as a second round in waves and light winds. The next FPT event will take place in April on Bonaire - we will report back for you.
