The third day of the Freestyle Pro Tour on Paros started quietly at first. With an expected lay day and a late skippers meeting at 13:00, the day seemed calm at first. But after about an hour the wind picked up unexpectedly. As the single and double elimination had already been completed, the jury spontaneously planned a surprising format for the competitors to take advantage of the short wind window.
Because: Super X is back! For a fun race, the judges modelled themselves on the legendary format that was a separate discipline in the World Cup in the 2000s. The riders started at the event site and their equipment was ready on the beach. After the start signal, everyone had to run to the beach, grab their equipment and take to the water via the beach start. There they raced to a buoy. On the way there, at the buoy itself and on the way back, they each had to perform one of five predefined moves. There was a choice of Spock, Kono, Culo, Eslider and Forward Loop. The decisive factor was who got back to the event site the fastest. The special challenge: all nine riders started at the same time. This led to chaotic scenes on the water as the freestylers raced side by side to the buoy. There were collisions at the buoy in particular as the riders tried to show off their moves. The final sprints back to the event area were also crucial, as there were still position changes after the riders had already dismounted from their equipment.
After three qualifying rounds, Adam Sims, Yentel Caers and Lennart Neubauer qualified for the final. In a close fight, Sims took third place, while Yentel Caers finished second. Once again, Lennart Neubauer secured victory. His success was also based on a clever choice of material: He was one of the few riders to choose a 5.2 mm sail, which proved to be a decisive advantage in a format where speed was the top priority.
The Freestyle Pro Tour announced further surprises for the next day. According to the organisers, two new formats are planned that are still in development. The exact details have not yet been announced. We are excited!
