Activist Merijn Tinga, also known as the "Plastic Soup Surfer", has successfully surfed from London to Paris over the past three weeks to draw attention to the littering of the North Sea. Yesterday, he paddled the last few metres across the Seine into the centre of Paris on his board, which is partly made of old plastic and mushroom threads.

Merijn Tinga's goal: to speed up the introduction of deposit systems in France, as he keeps coming across floating plastic bottles from France on his expeditions.

"I have reached the finish line. What an adventure, what wonderful encounters, what experiences. It was incredible! A special day, the highlight of which was a meeting with Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris! Incredible, incredible," writes Merijn Tinga after his arrival in Paris.
The surfing activist is convinced: "What did I talk to the mayor about? About littering, its causes and the solution: deposit systems. Like we have in the Netherlands, because it works. Six months after the deposit system was introduced, there were 80% fewer plastic bottles in circulation."
