When you’re frantically searching for your hat in the morning, seeking shelter from the rain in the slipstream of the big campervans, and the auxiliary heater is quietly humming away again at night, it becomes clear: autumn is here!
After weeks of erratic wind forecasts, there was no mistaking it last weekend: a powerful low-pressure system moved from Scotland across the North Sea, turning the forecast maps a deep red. Once there, it became clear: autumn is clearly peak season here – the weekend, combined with the Youth World Cup taking place at the same time, meant plenty of activity both on land and on the water. By Saturday, solid waves were already rolling into Klitmøller Bay, and on Sunday the wind was set to step it up a notch. In the morning there was a side-offshore wind and head-high sets; as the day went on, the wind gradually shifted further to the west-north-west and the waves grew bigger and bigger as the evening approached: Wind suitable for sails between 3.3 and 3.7 square metres, mast-high sets, golden evening light and the odd enforced break whenever another heavy shower rolled through – autumn really pulled out all the stops that day.
