Over the weekend, Circolo Surf Torbole hosted the first edition of the Garda Trentino Foil Days, which brought together three disciplines: Finn-class windsurfing, foiling and wingfoiling. The centrepiece of the competition was the RRD One Hour Classic, a regatta with over 35 years of history on Lake Garda. The event attracted top athletes from across Europe and combined sporting competition with an Expo Village, where manufacturers showcased their products and offered them for testing.
Over the first three days, there were several races in varying conditions. The final day was affected by a violent thunderstorm that swept across the region during the night from Saturday to Sunday. As a result, the morning north wind was very strong, whilst the Ora failed to materialise. The race committee was therefore forced to cancel the fourth and final race of the RRD One Hour Classic in all three categories. The final standings were thus based on the three races completed on the previous days.
Amado Vrieswijk came out on top in the windsurf foil class. The multiple winner finished ahead of Bruno Martini and the Dane Noah Vinther. In the wingfoil category, Luca Franchi took the win after making a decisive comeback in Saturday’s race. Sebastiano Zorzi finished second ahead of Carlo Ciabatti, who had been leading after the first day. The Finn class was won by PWA World Champion Matteo Iachino, ahead of France’s Kevin Grosjean and the Dutchman Bart Van den Bogaart. A special classification combined the results of athletes competing in both the Finn and Foil classes. The overall ranking was determined by adding the placings from both disciplines, with Bruno Martini coming out on top. Sergio Veneziani triumphed in the traditional Windsurfer LT class.
As well as the regatta series, the event also featured a freestyle wingfoil show programme showcasing jumps, spins and technical manoeuvres above the water. The freestyle contest ended with Rocco Sotomayor taking the win ahead of Sebastiano Zorzi and Lorenzo Raisa. Circolo Surf Torbole live-streamed the regattas on its social media channels.
The Expo Village was a central feature of the event. Manufacturers and retailers showcased equipment and organised test rides right by the water’s edge. Armando Bronzetti, President of Circolo Surf Torbole, gave a positive assessment: “Together with Garda Trentino, we wanted to create an event that brings together all aspects of these sports. It was a project we’d had in mind for a long time and which has now finally taken shape. The feedback confirms that we’re on the right track and inspires great enthusiasm for the future.”
