In metre-high waves and strong winds, Vincent Langer came out on top in the "Tower Race" of the California Surf Cup on Sylt. He won the long-distance race to the water level ahead of Gunnar Asmussen and Fabi Wolf. A wave alert with winds of up to 30 knots was issued for the following day.

Strong winds and high waves made for extreme conditions at Brandenburger Strand on Sylt. Too strong for regular races at the California Surf Cup - but instead of cancelling the opening day, the organisers quickly organised a "Tower Race". In this long-distance race, the participants had to surf up to the distinctive "Lange Hans" - the yellow offshore weather station within sight of the beach - and back again. Vincent Langer mastered the conditions best and secured victory ahead of Gunnar Asmussen and Fabi Wolf.

The biggest challenge for the starters was to find the right balance with their equipment. infamous Sylt shorebreak to overcome. After the start, they set off on the kilometre-long route to "Lange Hans", accompanied by a safety jet ski. Vincent Langer got off to a perfect start and controlled the race from the very beginning. He rounded the tower in first place and maintained his lead right to the finish. In addition to the prestige, the winner also received prize money of 500 euros.

Comeback of a legend

Gunnar Asmussen provided a special surprise. The man from Flensburg is one of the legends of the Windsurf Cup and made an impressive return after a long absence from competition. In impressive form, he showed his skills on the choppy North Sea and finished just behind Langer at the chequered flag. Asmussen's second place secured him prize money of 300 euros.

Fabi Wolf took third place and 200 euros in prize money. The athlete, who normally competes in the Olympic iQFOiL class, impressively demonstrated his versatility. In the raging North Sea off Sylt, Wolf showed that he is not only one of the strongest windsurfers in Germany on the foil, but also on the classic fin. Kai Paustian from Kiel and Tim Wunderlich from Hanover completed the top 5 in the Tower Race.

Outlook on wave discipline

The meteorologists have announced even better conditions on Brandenburg beach for the following day - wave alert! Things can get underway from 11.00 a.m., but before that the wave riders who have arrived spontaneously can sign up and warm up.
