15-year-old Karl Matysik took part in the European Windsurfing LT Championships on Lake Attersee in Austria. He came a strong 11th out of 128 participants in the B class. There were also more German surfers at this LT European Championship than ever before. In the following interview, he talks about his experiences.

What makes LT surfing special for you?

Pure equality of opportunity. Everyone rides exactly the same equipment. Only your own ability, tactics and fitness count.

How do the races work?

After an upwind start, the first cross to the windward mark begins. This is followed by a half-wind course to the windward mark of the outer loop. The next leg is a downwind course to the gate. The second cross takes you back up to the windward mark. After rounding the windward mark, the second downwind follows. You then go through the gate once again and finally on a half-wind course towards the finish line.

What was the atmosphere like behind the scenes?

They fight hard on the water, help each other on land and celebrate together. The motto is: 50 per cent fun and 50 per cent race.

Do you have to pump all the time?

Pumping is permitted for 30 seconds after the start signal. After that it is no longer permitted on the cross. On the half-wind and downwind course, however, pumping is permitted throughout.

How did you prepare?

Two weeks before the European Championships, I'm still at the Strander Surf Cup of the Surf Club Kiel at my home spot. With a third place overall, I felt very well prepared.

What was your highlight?

My personal highlight was the free drinks during the protest.

What is it like to race against experienced older riders?

They often have the perfect tactics and a very good feel for the wind, whereas I often have the fitness advantage. However, you learn a lot of new things in every single race.

Are only older people surfing?

No, the field is very mixed. From 15-year-olds to 85-year-olds, every age group is represented.

How was the atmosphere among the team?

Everyone helps everyone else with material problems, for example. In the evening, we eat and celebrate together.

Tip for beginners?

Simply take part - in a regatta or just try it out. It is a very beginner-friendly surf set.
