Nicolas Goyard was the man of the day at the iQFoil World Championship off Lanzarote. With five wins in five races, the Frenchman catapulted himself to second place in the rankings - despite having to battle with nausea. "We had perfect conditions, between 12 and 16 knots of stable wind, nice waves, it was really perfect on the water," enthused Nico Goyard. "I had a really good day, I couldn't have hoped for more, especially as I'm ill. This morning I threw up in the water, so I'm super happy that I managed to do it despite being ill, I just hope I'm fine for the final," said Goyard.
Sebastian Kördel, on the other hand, who had previously been in second place, had a pitch-black day and slipped to 16th place. After finishing 12th, 10th, 29th and 32nd, Kördel only managed to regain his form in the final race and at least finish in the top ten in fifth place. But Kördel still has every chance of winning the hoped-for title. Today the field will be split into gold and silver fleets for the next two days, before the top ten go into the medal races on Saturday.
As the regatta area was halfway between the Marina Rubicón and the island of Lobos, the races yesterday were very intense, with the entire field pushing hard at the starts, which led to several general recalls. Fabian Wolf is currently in 66th place, Jonne Heimann in 88th.
Van Opzeeland and Wilson still in the lead
Luuc van Opzeeland is still in the lead in the men's race and Emma Wilson in the women's race. While Wilson started yesterday with three wins from five races, Wilson gave her rivals no chance today and won all five races to maintain her six-point lead over second-placed Israeli Sharon Kantor, who has three first places, two second places and a fifth place. All four of the Israelis are in the top ten, and the World Championships will decide who starts at the Olympics.
Theresa Steinlein was constantly scratching at the top ten in her races, but was only able to move up to eighth place once. She is now in 21st place. Alisa Engelmann is 57th and Sophia Meyer is in 68th place.
