Grey clouds over Weymouth Bay, a westerly wind well over 15 knots and heavy chop characterised the fourth day of competition at the iQFOiL World Championships. 186 athletes battled it out in challenging conditions to secure their positions ahead of the decisive final day of qualifying. Following the tactically-driven Wednesday’s sprint slalom race The race organisers reverted to the course racing format and made the most of the steady wind conditions to run a full programme. The men’s and women’s fleets took turns completing four races on the challenging course off the south coast of Britain. With just one qualifying day remaining before Saturday’s final, the battle for the top ten positions in both fleets intensified.
Steinberg dominates with three wins on the day
Tamar Steinberg once again demonstrated her outstanding form and firmly consolidated her lead in the women’s event. The reigning European champion from Israel won three of the four races and ended the day with a record of 12-1-2-1. Her lead at the top of the standings grew to 44 net points. Behind her, the rankings shifted significantly: Sharon Kantor climbed from third to second place, putting Israel in the top two spots. Kantor now has 75 points in the overall standings. Britain’s Islay Watson defended third place on home waters with 101 points. Medea Falcioni from Italy, aged 15, held fourth place with 110 points. Stella Bilger from Australia had a difficult day and dropped from second to fifth place. Theresa Steinlein dropped from eleventh to thirteenth place, though she remains close to the top ten. Sophia Meyer is in 46th place, and Emma Schleicher in 59th.
Lyons reclaims top spot
In the men’s event, a closer battle for the lead developed. Noah Lyons from the USA got off to a strong start with finishes of 4th, 2nd and 4th in the first three races of the day. A false start in the fourth race was discarded from his results. With 36 net points, the American retook the overall lead. He is just five points clear of the runner-up. Johan Søe moved up to second place and, on 41 points, remains within striking distance of the top. Nicolas Goyard delivered one of the strongest performances of the day. The Frenchman won two consecutive races in the middle of the series and moved up to third place overall with 46 points. Luuc van Opzeeland from the Netherlands remains in fourth place in the title race with 48 points. Yoav Omer from Israel dropped four places after leading the previous day and now sits in fifth place with 66 points. The Germans Max Körner, Lenny Friemel and Finley Evans are ranked 75th, 79th and 92nd respectively.
Friday marks the final day of qualifying ahead of Saturday’s Medal Series. The top ten in both fleets will qualify for the final, where the world championship titles will be decided.
