The iQFOiL Youth & Junior World Championships have been running in Brest, France, since the end of last week, but the 379 starters from 38 nations - including 101 girls - were slowed down somewhat by little and changeable wind in the first few days. While only two sprint slaloms were held in the U17 category, the U19 boys were able to compete in four slalom races.
Pleasing news from a German perspective: siblings Emma and Moritz Schleicher are among the front runners in their classes, with Emma in seventh place in the girls' U19 category, level on points with fourth place. She has two third places in the rankings and has already managed to cross off 19th place at the start. Her brother Moritz is even further ahead in the boys' U17, he won a slalom and is tied on points with the runner-up in fifth place.
A total of 13 young German foilers are taking part in Brest, coached by Dennis Müller and Diederik Bakker, among others. In the lead after the first races are Medea Falcon in the U19 girls, Peleg Rajuan in the U19 boys, Tsz Yuet Cheung in the U17 girls and Peyton Dits in the U17 boys. The preliminary heats will continue until Wednesday, with slalom, course races and marathons all possible. The winners will then be determined in the medal races on Thursday.
