Shortly before the start of the second World Cup of the season, many riders are already in Chile to familiarise themselves with the spot in Matanzas. A fantastic wave for down-the-line riding awaits them there, albeit often with difficult wind conditions. Leon Jamaer described the spot in Matanzas at last year's event as follows: "The wind picks up at midday and clean two-metre-high waves roll into the bay of Matanzas, which is surrounded by rocks. The waves become steep upwind directly in front of the rocks - several turns can already be made here on the set waves. However, the wind is very unstable here due to the wind cover of a large dune."
Matanzas is the main spot for the five-star World Cup, but there is also the option of travelling to Topocalma, around 20 km to the south, on the final day. Among others, Julian Salmonn, who finished third last year, Alessio Stillrich, Adam Warchol, Federico Morisio and Miguel Chapuis are already there. With Marcilio Browne, Bernd Roediger, Antoine Martin, Morgan Noireaux and many others, the entire world elite has registered for the contest, including of course last year's winner Philip Köster. A little surprise: Wave legend Francisco Goya is also on the entry list for the main field! Only Marc Paré is missing due to injury, while Ricardo Campello is taking a break from competition in 2024. Lina Erpenstein, Maria Behrens, Sybille Bode, Alexia Kiefer, Sarah Hauser and Justyna Sniady are among those who have signed up for the women's event.
The World Cup in Chile is organised by the IWT and the event runs from 1 to 12 April. During this time, at least one single elimination will be held, but ideally the IWT-typical dingle elimination, i.e. a single with an intermediate round for the losers from the first heats. In addition to the pros, the masters, juniors, pro-juniors and the open amateur class will also be competing. We will inform you about start times and livestream as soon as we have more information!
The heats for the World Cup in Chile were drawn and announced on Tuesday. Firstly, two starters will be drawn for the main field in a Challengers Round. There they will face the 30 best riders in the ranking. Philip Köster will face Marino Gil Gherardi, Russ Faurot and Diego Fabres in the first round, while Julian Salmonn will meet Bernd Roediger, Alessio Stillrich and a rider from the trials. In the women's race, Lina Erpenstein, Maria Behrens and Sybille Bode will meet in the first round, with Maria Morales fourth in this heat. Alexia Kiefer is up against Maria Andres, Sol Degrieck and Lisa Wermeister.
