The Masters division caused a furore at the IWT/PWA World Cup in Puerto Rico on the second day of the competition. At the Vega Baja spot, the experienced windsurfers showed impressive jumps and wave rides despite small waves thanks to strong trade winds and made it exciting.
The biggest surprise of the day was the unexpected elimination of the reigning Masters World Champion Mike Friedl from Spain. Despite his excellent surfing skills, Friedl was unable to find good waves in his heat. He therefore narrowly missed out on a place in the final in a very high-calibre field.
Vincent Beauvarlet from Guadeloupe put in an outstanding performance. With 7.94 points, he secured the highest score in the semi-final. His excellent wave selection and relaxed style made him the favourite for the final.
The final of the Masters division will therefore feature three locals alongside Vincent Beauvarlet:
The event is expected to continue on Tuesday. If the forecast remains unchanged, the event will probably continue on Shacks Beach. The women and pros could then also be back in action, with Antoine Martin, Marc Paré, Takara Ishii and Morgan Noireaux among those competing in Puerto Rico. Bernd Roediger is also still in the running, but was sent to the Redemption Round on the first day of the competition.
