The water sports enthusiasts will compete against each other in five different disciplines: Windsurfing, surfing, SUP, wingsurfing and Kiting. A winner is determined in each discipline and the athlete who achieves the best result in four of the five disciplines is honoured with an overall title as Master of the Ocean.
In the team competition, on the other hand, five specialists per team compete with one rider for each discipline.
The event will bring together a total of 80 elite athletes from 17 different countries on the North Shore of Cabarete. From a German perspective, it will be particularly interesting as Germany has put together one of the two international teams, Team Condor, led by Sylt local Chris Bungher. Worldcupper Lina Erpenstein from Kiel will be there to fly the German flag in windsurfing.
The opposing team Edelweiss from Switzerland also has a prominent line-up: Among others, the extremely creative Swiss waterman Balz Müller will be taking part. It will be exciting and we can expect plenty of action on the Atlantic off Cabarete.
As founder of Happy Dolphins DR, an organisation dedicated to connecting communities with the ocean through swimming, rescue and surf training, coordinator Patricia Hiraldo commented that Master of the Ocean will take into account four important principles: Environment, Community, Sport and Culture. The event aims to be a showcase or exhibition event for sustainable practices such as composting, recycling, reuse of materials and alternative energies, avoiding the use of single-use plastics, among others.
We wish everyone involved every success and will be reporting live from Cabarete in February.
