With the "Speed Package", Severne is launching a setup developed as a system for speed surfing. The combination consists of the Monster sail and the Fury board and was developed in direct collaboration with Antoine Albeau and Cedric Bordes, who both achieved their most recent top speeds on this material. Albeau travelled 52.25 knots in LüderitzBordes reached the Prince of Speed on the open sea 47.62 knots.
According to Severne, the sail and board were developed together under identical conditions, with every production decision - from the camber configuration to the profile depth to the board outline - resulting directly from the requirements of the record tests. The combination should therefore work both for the speed channel and on the open sea, in the wind range from 20 knots to full power. There are a total of five sail sizes and four board sizes.
The Severne Monster speed sail is based on a seven-batten construction with four cambers. According to the manufacturer, the upper section is slimmer in order to reduce weight and drag. The deeper profile is designed to keep the power constant across the entire wind range without creating pressure peaks. "A good speed sail must make the conditions seem easier than they are. You need a large wind range, strong acceleration and stability at the same time," explains Albeau. Bordes adds: "The sail is super stable. You are never pulled forwards and have constant power in your hands. When you're battling against the wind and chop, you don't really feel whether the wind is increasing or decreasing. So you can concentrate on the run." According to Severne, the Monster is optimised for RDM masts, but also works with SDM. The sizes include 4.9, 5.3, 5.7, 6.3 and 6.9 square metres.
The Severne Fury speedboard was developed for world records, but should also demonstrate its versatility in practice, the manufacturer promises. Bordes rode a 5.7 monster with the 45 mm Fury in La Palme. The size range is orientated towards this spectrum of use. "The same concept applies to the board as to the sail. You need something that is easy to ride, has good acceleration and when you're going full speed, you can push and trust the material. No spin-out, no tail lift," says Bordes, describing the requirements. The CNC precision manufacturing combines carbon fibre layup with strategic reinforcements. Double-row inserts, fixed loops and a tuttle box are part of the equipment. The available sizes are 42, 45, 49 and 55 cm wide.
Antoine Albeau, who had only recently switched to Severne, set up his boards at Diaz Point near Lüderitz - a spot that looks more like a European strip than a canal. He emphasises the easy handling of the combo: "You just take your sail, put the mast in, put the boom on, put the fin in the board and then you go on the strip and you're the fastest," summarises Albeau. The material works regardless of the spot. "It's not extreme. It's fast, it's powerful, but in a good way. You can use the Monster almost like a slalom sail," says Bordes about the sail.
