With the Air 7, Goya presents its new freestyle board, which has been rethought from the ground up. We wanted to find out more about what's behind it and spoke to co-developer Adam Lewis.

Shorter, faster, more radical – with the Air 7, Goya is launching a completely redesigned freestyle board onto the market. In this interview, co-developer Adam Lewis reveals what has changed, why it is more than just a simple update and what drove the Goya crew when designing it.

What are the most important new features of the Goya Air 7?

The new Air is not just updated, it's reborn. Generation seven is a shorter, more manoeuvrable board with higher top speed and a more direct, comfortable shape. Built to keep up with the wildest ideas you can throw at it. With the completely new outline we have refined the nose and tail, and with a slalom-inspired rocker, tuned for more speed than ever, we've built the fastest, most controllable Air we’ve ever made. The flat in the bottom moved further forward and we've stretched it out for explosive early planing and instant lift and acceleration into your first move. Also the vee and concaves shifted forward for effortless handling and control in every transition. The board now self-trims and is effortlessly fast regardless of sail ducking or switching stance. Volume flow has been completely reimagined – flat under your front foot for stability and lightning response, a touch more dome further back for comfort and control. The thinner tail provides more control on landings – there’s nothing where you don’t need it. A more pulled-in nose keeps control in chop and stays clear when you go big, giving you freedom in the air and confidence on landings. The constructions again this year throughout the whole range have just gotten so epic. You can see we have these crisscrosses going through the stance area. It kind of makes the board super stiff and anything you put in comes back really quick, especially in freestyle. We’ve gone for a full carbon deck and hull, this means zero energy is wasted, more pop, more feel and instance response. Also the footpads have a new layout and optimized dual-density blend, which means you have the right support and cushioning where you need it whilst saving weight and minimizing drag. The new patterns are angled in the right direction to give you maximum grip and connection to the board. All in all the new Air 7 is well thought out. It is easy to use. It's stiff. It's direct. And it's a lot of fun!

The boards are super stiff and reactive - anything you put in comes back really quick, especially in freestyle.

Are there big differences between the three different sizes?

We designed the three sizes to cover a full range of riders and conditions. The 86 is tuned slightly more toward control, with a touch more vee up front and a bit more dome in the back – ideal for strong-wind spots like Fuerteventura. The 94 sits right in the middle as a true all-rounder that suits riders and conditions, while the 102 is biased slightly the other way – a bit more drive and earlier planing response, perfect for lighter winds or typical lighter conditions or even a heavier rider. Overall they are very similar, just a milimetre here or there to tune them in. The goal was to make all three sizes work well across the board. Actually adding the US-Box was an extension of that too. You can tune the board that little bit extra for exactly the style of riding you want to do, or if you're smaller, with the straps further forward, you can still have the fin in the correct place in relation to your stance.

Having someone like Nic Hibdige, who's involved with our day to day custom building here on Maui but also a world class freestyler was an invaluable asset to have.

What inspired you to develop a completely new freestyle board?

From my side on the shaping and design it was a special project that I'd been wanting to tackle for sometime – I started out as a freestyle grom myself, so it was important for me to really nail this one. As a team it gave us the chance to completely rethink the fundamentals – rocker, rail flow, and volume distribution – not just to keep pace, but to push things forward. The result is a board that feels faster, more dynamic, and perfectly suited to today’s powerful, aerial style. There was a real push from our freestyle team to evolve the boards, and having Nic Hibdige here in Maui really helped spark that process. His energy and development experience brought great perspective.
