The sat nav doesn't need to be changed at all: The surf festival on Fehmarn will also take place on the south beach in Burgtiefe in 2027 - just a few hundred metres away from its current location. On Saturday evening, organiser Torsten Schulze from Freiluft announced that the event will move to the area at the Westmole at the end of the peninsula next year.
The new location has a much wider beach - around 4.5 hectares in total. This will provide sufficient space for both the exhibitors and the party area. The stage, catering and food court will move directly onto the beach for the first time. "We are already looking forward to great sunsets and beach parties," said organiser Torsten Schulze. There is also hope that the construction work at the current location will still allow some of the familiar car parks to be used for the beach camp in 2027.
The new location was preceded by months of negotiations. "Over the past eight months, we have held intensive discussions with the state and coastal protection authorities, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority, farmers and landowners and examined five different locations for a new festival site," says Schulze. "Due to the ongoing reviews, we have not yet been able to identify a new location for the festival as a whole - but we are still working on finding an event area that is close to the water and at the same time offers enough distance from local residents and nature worth protecting. We are therefore all the more pleased that we have been able to reach an agreement with the Fehmarn Tourism Service in recent days to secure the Westmole on the south beach as the new venue and thus the continued existence of the Fehmarn Surf Festival."
Dana Zielinski, Head of Events at Tourismus-Service Fehmarn, says of the new location: "We were already able to successfully organise the SUP World Cup on the south beach at the Westmole in 2014. Although the infrastructure on site is a challenge, we are convinced that we can create a good interim solution together with our festival-tested building yard and with the support and understanding of local residents - until we hopefully have a suitable event area on the island from 2028."
At the same time, the event is getting bigger: next year, the Surf Festival and the Foil Festival, which was previously held a week later at the same spot, will be merged. This means that water sports fans of all disciplines will be able to enjoy the latest innovations in one long weekend.
This puts an end to the speculation surrounding the future of the surf festival. The island of Fehmarn also expressly wishes to keep the festival and other events such as the Bulli Festival on the island in the years to come.
By the way: next year's long Ascension Day weekend is from 6 to 9 May - save the date!
