We normally test new equipment, but for the October issue we went in search of old boards. In addition, World Cup photographer John Carter reveals how to take great surf photos, we show a classic freestyle trick, wave newcomers, shed light on the fascination of the windsurfer LT and much more!

The question of whether it absolutely has to be a new board or whether an older model would do just as well is one we regularly encounter. Especially when looking at the prices for new material, many people tackle this question and prefer to search the second-hand market. Whilst the selection on the "scene-related" platforms such as surf Kleinanzeigen or Daily Dose is good, it gets strange when you look at the classified ads: prehistoric standing sail equipment is advertised as "ideal for beginners", while astronomical amounts are sometimes asked for ancient equipment. Selling something like this to unsuspecting beginners is reckless, anyone who falls for it is cheated out of the fun of windsurfing with suitable equipment. But when is too old? We have compared several generations of boards as examples: From the no nose toothpicks of the early nineties to various evolutionary stages and today's freeriders. A very entertaining and revealing comparison - you can read the results in the October issue of surf, which is available in stores from today!

The Windsurfer LT, on the other hand, is completely timeless: launched a few years ago as a retro fun board, it is now celebrated by a huge global fan base. The simplicity of the board has brought back the original freedom of windsurfing: mast in the sail, luff hand-tightened, boom on, and off you go, wherever you want to go, in almost any wind force. Out of the zip traffic of the freeride slopes. The fact that the board is also becoming increasingly popular in a standardised class as a regatta board is of secondary importance to many. But it is precisely the principle of the simple standardised class that now has a strong appeal not only for old race warriors, but above all for "penniless" youngsters. You compete on the same, relatively inexpensive material. The best surfer wins here, not the one who can afford the most expensive equipment. We shed light on the fascination of windsurfing LT!
