In the video, Nico tells the whole story of the trip: planning, start, challenges on the road and the feeling afterwards. Exciting documentary!
Together with Gunnar Asmussen, Nico Prien started in the Kiel Fjord, with the actual destination being the small town of Bagenkop on the Danish island of Langeland. Due to the rather weak and offshore wind, foils were chosen for the equipment. On the long tour, the factor of flying over the chop with the foils instead of getting every single wave in the bones also played a role.
At the beginning, both had to contend with very weak and variable winds, and the conditions only became more constant shortly before the finish. As the pair not only wanted to surf to Denmark, but also back again afterwards, they changed their plans shortly before the finish. Instead of heading for Langeland, they headed for the island of Ærø further west. This gave Nico and Gunnar a better angle to the wind for the beat back to Kiel.
On the way back, the wind picked up and became more constant. At around 20 knots, Gunnar and Nico had a much easier time than on the outward journey, but the crew on the boat had to contend with the waves.
"We had everything between zero and 22 knots, that was really tough," reports Gunnar Asmussen on his return. "It was physically and mentally super tough." Nico Prien adds: "Because it was so hard, it feels like a great achievement. A competition with ourselves". In total, the two of them surfed around 110 kilometres and have documented this trip in an extremely worthwhile way!
