Pierre Mortefon has his sights set on another victory in Fuerteventura – the Frenchman is preparing to defend his Slalom X world title
At the World Cup on Fuerteventura, following the A rousing start with the freestylers Starting tomorrow, the only Slalom X event of the year takes place, and with it the decider for the 2026 World Championship. Since the discipline was introduced in 2024, Pierre Mortefon has won both World Championship titles awarded to date; now the Frenchman is aiming to complete the hat-trick. Last season, despite less than ideal preparation due to injuries and Sponsorship chaos He was absolutely dominant, winning both events on Fuerteventura and Tenerife. Ahead of the season’s sole and decisive event, Chris Yates from the PWA caught up with Pierre to find out how he’s feeling ahead of his title defence.
Hey Pierre, how are you feeling ahead of the start of the season, and how was your break over the New Year?
It’s going really well – everything’s looking good at the moment. We had a very busy start to the year in April and May with several national and international events, for example in Leucate and at the Défi, so we’ve already had quite a few races this year, which is brilliant. After that, I had a bit of time at home to get ready, train and prepare for this legendary event in Sotavento.
I suppose you’re glad that the preparations for this year’s event haven’t been quite as chaotic as last year’s. Are you happy with your new kit?
Yes, definitely. Since January and the change of sponsor, I’ve spent a lot of time on the water. We’ve been working on the equipment with Amado [Vrieswijk] and have been riding together, which is brilliant as he’s one of the fastest. We’ve already competed at various levels this year too; we’ve also had a few training camps in France with the French federation, as well as at the Alma Pro Camp in Hyères. The years are flying by, but I’ve gained more experience and still have the same motivation and passion – so let’s get going!
Despite these complications in 2025, you still managed to secure a commanding victory last year – how are you feeling ahead of this year’s event, and what do you love about Fuerte?
All those stories are now behind me, and it’s great to have a clear head. I’m ready in many ways – as I said, the equipment is ready, and I’ve spent a lot of time on it. Physically, too, I feel really good compared to last year, when I only surfed twice after a calf injury. And mentally, I just want to race and be on the starting line. Fuerteventura is certainly one of the best events on the tour. Probably the toughest, but I like it and will be working towards victory again.
