Sotavento's wind machine doesn't seem to be running quite as consistently as usual at the moment. On the third day of the PWA World Cup on Fuerteventura, the first heats didn't start until around 3pm. The remaining freestylers therefore had enough time to rest and then let it rip all the more. The winners of the day and therefore of the event are Sarah-Quita Offringa and Lennart Neubauer - Adrien Bosson and Yentel Caers complete the men's podium, Oda Johanne and Maaike Huvermann the women's podium.
"I've been watching the World Cup on Fuerte since I was a little kid. Now to be up here on the podium next to riders like Yentel Caers and Adrien Bossen feels surreal," gushed 20-year-old Lennart Neubauer after the final.
Due to his defeat in the single elimination, he had to beat Bosson twice to take the Fuerte crown - and he did. In the first round more than confidently, and in the subsequent super final very narrowly. In the end, the two were separated by exactly one point.
Neubauer, who at his young age is already very calculated and has a precise plan in mind for his heats, knew exactly what he had to do to beat the experienced world champion from 2022, but Bosson made it anything but easy for him. Neubauer was all the happier about his victory at the end when he was grabbed by Balz Müller and Maaike Huvermann during the interview and carried away on their shoulders - the new freestyle king of Fuerte.
Sarah-Quita Offringa and Oda Johanne were separated by well over a point in the final for the women's world championship title. With a weakening wind, the experienced Sarah-Quita routinely reeled off her programme and secured her 15th world title in freestyle with many stylish sliding manoeuvres. Will anyone ever be able to top that?
Despite a somewhat sobering final run, Oda Johanne was more than happy in the end, as she was able to beat Maaike Huvermann with powerful moves in the heat beforehand to secure her first runner-up world title. She has been dreaming of it since 2015, reported the Norwegian. So two big dreams came true today.
All the details of the final day and the best pictures will follow shortly in the big Fuerte review.
