After a slow start on Saturday, the second day of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA World Cup saw more action as the wind returned. There were periods where the wind was up and down, but ultimately the first results of the competition were achieved in the U17 girls and U15 boys. So far, however, there has only been one single elimination and the results may still change in the second round.
Maria Morales Novarro (Goya Windsurfing) got off to a strong start in the U17 girls' event, winning both of today's finals with a confident performance in which the 16-year-old landed several solid front loops and showed aggressive wave riding. Just 12-year-old Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails) put in a great performance and secured second place ahead of Annagiulia Piccaglia after the first two finals.
In the girls U20 only the top 3 are left. Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone) was the first girl to secure her place in the final of the PWA World Cup after beating Lisa Wermeister (Fanatic / Duotone) in heat one. The 17-year-old impressed with an excellent backloop and made the most of the small waves. Meanwhile, Isabel Trivino Delgado (Severne / Severne Sails) went straight through to the final after winning heat two ahead of Julia Pasquale (Fanatic / Duotone) and Lucia Trivino Delgado (Severne / Severne Sails), who would go through to the repechage round against Wermeister. Pasquale proved to be too strong in the repechage round and secured the last place in the final, which will hopefully be held today.
Peter Gobisch (Fanatic / Duotone), Arthur Van den Brande (RRD / RRD Sails) and Javier Escribano Toribio (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing) all qualified for the boys' U15 final - with the latter successfully surviving the repechage round. The final turned out to be a close affair, with Gobisch narrowly prevailing 2:1 in the end with the judges. In the end, Gobisch narrowly claimed victory, with the young German's superior surfing proving decisive. Van den Brande and Escribano Toribio both surfed well, but in the end it was Van den Brande's undoing that only one of his jumps counted, as the criteria stipulated that the two jumps had to be different.
The U17 boys also took to the water during the afternoon and they are now down to the top four surfers. Teammates Carlos Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone) and Tobias Bjørnaa (Fanatic / Duotone) will meet in the first semi-final, while Grigoris Stathopoulos (Severne / Severne Sails) will battle Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde) for a place in the final.
As the waves subsided during the afternoon, it was decided to wait for better conditions to finish the U20 girls' final and the U17 boys' final, and the competitors were dismissed just before 6pm.
