Hanstholm presented itself from its best side yesterday and delivered perfect conditions for the PWA Youth & Junior World Cup. After the Start at the Klitmøller mussel reef continued yesterday with sunshine, strong westerly winds and crisp waves in Middles. Immediately after the skippers' meeting at 12.00 noon, we headed out onto the water to make the most of the conditions.
It started with the U21 girls, who impressed with forward loops and solid wave rides, just like the day before. Although Bobbi-Lynn de Jong had already notched up two wins the day before, she was denied a hat-trick. Helena Lale secured the last victory of the event. However, De Jong had already established a strong position with her two victories from the previous day. The 15-year-old deservedly took the overall victory of the event ahead of Trine Gobisch and Helena Lale, who completed the podium.
A decisive heat with important world championship points was on the programme for the U21 boys. Arthur Kahrs finished in fourth place, although he performed the best double-forward attempt of the event - but this was not enough to overtake Hannes Gobisch, who finished third overall.
However, the main focus was on the duel between the world number 2 and 3 ahead of the final on Maui in October. In a nerve-wracking heat, especially for the families watching on the beach, the smallest point difference decided the winner. Anton Richter prevailed and won the World Cup in the Cold Hawaii stage, which puts him in an excellent starting position for the final on Maui. There, the successor to the previous U21 world champion Liam Dunkerbeck, who has outgrown his age group, will be crowned.
Richter impressed with spectacular waves and jumps and deservedly secured victory. Valters Videnieks was not too disappointed despite the narrow defeat. The Latvian also rode strongly and can be proud of his performance. As number 3 in the world rankings, he remains a strong contender for the final.
In the U18 boys' competition was so close that the top three had to ride an additional heat to determine the final placings. Peter Gobisch rode extremely well and filled his scoresheet with big jumps and radical wave rides. With his convincing performance, Gobisch gave the competition no chance and secured the event win. He was followed by Emil Skov Nielsen and Bjørn Olesen, who also put in strong performances but lost out to the dominant Gobisch.
Thanks to the automatic flag system, the competitions ran like clockwork, with only a three-minute break between heats. Next up were the U15 boys. Particularly impressive was the performance of 11-year-old Liam Calo, who handled the challenging conditions with aplomb. Calo trains daily on Lake Garda, but normally without waves. Second place yesterday went to another member of the Gobisch family - 12-year-old Anton Gobisch. However, Mika Henning secured second place in the overall standings.
Today we're heading back to Hanstholm for a fun session, followed by the official prize-giving ceremony for the wave discipline at the NASA House in Klitmøller. Tomorrow it will be the turn of the slalom riders!
