In the Challenger Rounds of the Quatro Maui Pro, the first five-star World Cup of the season, 20 athletes initially battled it out for four places in the main field. Graham Ezzy came out on top of the qualifiers, with former world champion and event sponsor Francisco Goya following in second place. Casey Hauser and Levi Lenz complete the quartet that moves into the round of the best 32. Unfortunately, it was the end of the line for Leon Maethner, who won his heat in round two of qualifying but had to give way to the others in the decisive heat.
Morgan Noireaux, on the other hand, delivered the most complete performance at the start. With a total score of 14.20 points, the Hawaiian secured the highest heat score of the day. His best wave earned him 8.77 points - also a top score. In the critical area of a mast-high wave, Noireaux performed a spectacular goiter in which he flew far over the lip and landed perfectly on the wave. The transition into the next bottom turn was seamless. The jury rated this manoeuvre as the best of the entire day in a strong field of competitors.
Kai Lenny confirmed his exceptional position on his home spot. The Hawaiian achieved the second-highest score of the day with 13.27 points. Lenny demonstrated his ability to adapt to any condition that Ho'okipa offers. Bernd Roediger set an exclamation mark with one of the most explosive moments of the day. His best wave was awarded 8.07 points - the second highest individual score. As always, the Hawaiian showed an outstanding style. The trio of Noireaux, Lenny and Roediger set the standard for the rest of the competition on the first day.
With Marcilio Browne, Philip Köster, Thomas Traversa, Antoine Martin and Liam Dunkerbeck, the big names also made it through the first round. The early elimination of world champion Marc Paré, who has to go through to the Redemption Round, is a big surprise. Julian Salmonn, Anton Richter and Nick Spangenberg will also get a second chance to move up the field
Marine Hunter from France took a clear lead in the women's competition. With a heat score of 8.67 points, she is clearly ahead of the competition. Pauline Katz from Switzerland followed in second place and also qualified for the semi-finals. Coco Foveau from France scored 6.9 points and secured third place. Lina Erpenstein from Germany completes the quartet with 5.17 points, which qualified directly for the semi-finals. The four athletes now await their opponents from the remaining heats. Lisa Wermeister, Maria Andrés, Maria Behrens and Sol Degrieck, among others, still have the chance to make it into the top eight. Unfortunately, Sybille Bode was eliminated after the first redemption round.
