The Strander Surf Cup 2025 took place last weekend, organised by Surf Club Kiel e.V. Despite changeable weather conditions with sun, wind and rain, the organisers managed to put races on the water on both days. A total of 20 athletes competed in two classes: Eight raceboard riders and twelve windsurfer LT riders. The comparatively low number of participants did not detract from the quality of the event; on the contrary, there was growing interest in the windsurfer LT class in particular.
Saturday started with challenging conditions, but despite the unsettled weather, four races were successfully completed. The participants successfully adapted to the changing conditions. After the races, athletes and helpers took the opportunity to round off the day with a barbecue in a relaxed atmosphere. On Sunday, the race organisers were once again able to make the most of the conditions. With an early start at 10.30 a.m., three more races were held before the weather deteriorated again. Herbert Weynand won on the windsurfer LT ahead of Bernd Neumann and Kai Falkenthal. Niko Mattig won the raceboards, followed by Robert Schulz and Hubertus Tesdorpf.
One notable trend that emerged at the Strander Surf Cup 2025 was the increasing popularity of the windsurfer LT class. With 12 participants, this category made up the majority of starters. Surf Club Kiel e.V. plans to take the interest in the windsurfer LT class into account when planning the regatta for 2026. A possible visit to the international Division II is also being considered.
