The World Sailing Association has decided that the windsurfing competitions at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar will once again be contested on the Techno 293 OD. The One Design material was already used at the Games in Singapore 2010, Nanjing 2014 and Buenos Aires 2018. According to a statement from the supplier, it will now also offer young athletes in Dakar optimum conditions for competitions in all wind conditions.
The decision in favour of the Techno 293 OD is therefore based on its characteristics as a globally popular, affordable and versatile board. It is regarded as an entry-level board for regattas with standardised material. Especially in the light winds typical of the Dakar, the board is expected to play to its strengths and enable fair competitions.
The 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar are the first Olympic sporting event ever to be held on the African continent. From 31 October to 13 November 2026, young athletes from all over the world will compete for medals in the Senegalese capital. The choice of venue and equipment is intended to have an impact beyond the sporting competition.
Tahe, as the manufacturer of the Techno 293 OD, and the Techno 293 class are pursuing an ambitious goal together with the organisers: the Youth Olympic Games 2026 in Dakar should have a lasting impact on sport throughout Africa. The focus is on education and the long-term development of sport beyond the event. The choice of the widely available and affordable Techno 293 OD is intended to help lower the barriers to entry and get more young people interested in Olympic surfing.
