On 13 July, the fifth edition of Girls on Tour took place in Pozo Izquierdo. Around 30 women came together to train in the waves alongside professional female windsurfers from the World Cup. Sarah-Quita Offringa, Daida Moreno, Sol Degrick, Maria Behrens and other top athletes shared their expertise with the participants. The organisers, led by Pauline Katz, have observed year after year that more women are feeling at home in Pozo and discovering this challenging spot for themselves. The spot is regarded as one of the most iconic windsurfing locations in the world, but its rough conditions deter many beginners. The initiative aims to lower precisely this barrier and make the sport more accessible to women. The organisers have several objectives: to raise the profile of women’s windsurfing, to grow the community, to introduce more women to challenging spots, to increase the number of female participants on the World Tour, and to advance the standard of the sport as a whole.
Premiere in Sotavento
The first edition of Girls on Tour, with a focus on freestyle, took place in Sotavento this week. The event marked the start of a collaboration between the René Egli Surf Centre, the PWA World Tour and Girls on Tour. Twenty-five women took part, including the best female freestylers, who had previously competed in the World Cup. The professionals coached the participants in small groups. Sotavento is one of the world’s best freestyle spots and offered ideal conditions for the session. The crystal-clear water and the shallow areas allowed the participants to concentrate fully on their manoeuvres. The PWA media team documented the entire session, during which only women were on the water.
