The speed scene met on Fehmarn for the International German Championships. Due to the conditions, part-time work was the order of the day. In the end, the veterans came out on top, but the youngsters are moving up!

The Orther Reede is the traditional spot for the International German Speed Surfing Championship - a spot that works in many different wind directions. So far this season, the speeders have had rather bad luck with the wind, so the hope that many heats could be organised on Fehmarn was all the greater. More than 40 participants had registered, including old acquaintances from Germany and Sweden, such as the defending champion Gunnar Asmussen from Flensburg, as well as some new faces who had already attracted attention at the previous regatta in Dorum. "Increasing numbers of participants are not a matter of course," said the organisers happily.

However, the hoped-for wind was missing (once again) in the first two days. The time was used for a brief refresher on the rules to ensure that all participants had the same conditions. For Monday, however, the weather models showed southerly winds with gusts of around 20 knots. To make the most of the wind, the regatta day started nice and early in the morning. The participants were ready, the course had been set by regatta organiser Manuela "Manu" Buch, but the wind was still in a deep sleep. Fortunately, the wind picked up over the course of the day, not up to 20 knots, but still enough to complete the first 90-minute race. Gunnar Asmussen secured the first victory of this year's IDM ahead of Uwe-Sören Schmidt and Matthias Popp.

After the successful first race, we had to wait again, as the wind was not due to return until Wednesday - again from southerly directions, again with around 18-20 knots. Fortunately, this time the weather models were more favourable and two races could be held. The picture at the top remained largely unchanged: Gunnar Asmussen in first place, followed by Uwe-Sören Schmidt and now Michael Brozio. So it was clear: whether it was strong winds of well over 30 knots like 2024 or supposedly light winds - the measure of all things is Gunnar Asmussen. In his fastest run, Asmussen achieved more than 34 knots on average over 250 metres!

Unfortunately, the wind calmed down again on Thursday, only to return on Friday from a westerly direction with another forecast of 20 knots. Unfortunately, this mark was not reached, but the conditions were still good enough for another race. Gunnar Asmussen also won this race ahead of Uwe-Sören Schmidt. Third place went to 21-year-old Michel Gutbier for the first time!

In the final standings, Gunnar Asmussen defended his title ahead of Uwe-Sören Schmidt and Michael Brozio. The women's title went to Tatiana Dianova ahead of Gila Steinbacher and Marion Neuling. This means that there were no new favourites on the podium this year. However, as the last race shows, things may look different next year...
