Germany's first and Europe's largest surfing centre, Surftown, is being built in Hallbergmoos, north of Munich. The ground-breaking ceremony took place at the end of July in the Munich Airpot Business Park. The 180-metre-long pool with a running wave is due to start trial operations in autumn 2023 - and will open to the public in spring 2024.

The waves range from 30 centimetres to a whopping 2.5 metres in height and can run into the artificial bay at intervals of ten seconds. The facility will cover a total of 20,000 square metres. "We are very pleased and proud that we are now getting closer to our dream of surfing in the Munich metropolitan region every day," says Chris Boehm-Tettelbach, CEO of SURFTOWN® MUC. "I would like to express my sincere thanks to the municipality of Hallbergmoos, which has taken on the challenges of our future project with a remarkable pioneering spirit - as well as the responsible authorities."

Thanks to a huge photovoltaic system and filtered water from the surrounding moorland, the facility also fulfils sustainable requirements.

Stephan Gölnitz comes from Bochum and had Holland as his home windsurfing territory for many years before moving to Munich in 1996 for the job of test editor at surf magazine. The materials engineering graduate worked as a surf instructor on the Ijsselmeer during his studies and competed for several seasons for the Essen sailing team in the Surfbundesliga and the Funboard Cup. He completed a traineeship at surf-Magazin in the test department and since then has actively accompanied almost all tests on the boom and for more than 10 years also as a photographer. Stephan has covered many thousands of test kilometers, mainly on Lake Garda and in Langebaan, but also in Egypt and Tobago. He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
