Storms in January are not necessarily something completely new, especially not in the north of Germany. However, a look at the readings from January at Kiel Lighthouse showed that at least 19 knots (five Beaufort) were measured on 27 days in January 2024. Such values can be quite annoying for a landlubber. However, the ever-growing number of winter surfers are delighted, especially as January was also slightly warmer than normal and rainier than usual - but with more hours of sunshine.

The new surf magazine also has a lot of wind in all sections. In the test, we also dispel a myth, namely that you inevitably have to use wave sails with small sails for high winds, even if you don't surf in the surf. We tested eight alternatives from the freemove range with much better all-round characteristics!
As an alternative to the big surf in Denmark's "Cold Hawaii", there are also seven spots in the hinterland where even less storm-tested surfers can hide and surf safely. We take a closer look at the fjords and lakes.
However, there was no alternative to our Dutch colleague Mart Kuperij's decision to finally learn the front loop properly after decades of procrastination. Many of you will probably recognise yourselves in his amusing and instructive report about his long journey to the front somersault!
