The LT version of the windsurfer has been experiencing a second youth in recent years and is developing into one of the largest one-design classes in the world. From 11 to 16 June, more than 200 windsurfers will come to Lake Garda for the European Championships. In Torbole, where the Circolo Surf Torbole is organising the event on behalf of the Italian Sailing Federation, there will be a new record number of participants for a continental championship in this class after the 2019 World Championships. There are currently 208 pre-registered participants from 15 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the United States, South Africa and Singapore.
"A class that is famous for its 'windsurfer spirit', with which it competes in the disciplines of course racing, slalom, freestyle and long distance: fun and the experience of unique moments remain the focus of the regattas on this board," promise the organisers. The programme includes a training day on Tuesday, 11 June and the evening opening ceremony with a parade from the Circolo Surf Torbole through the town centre. The official start of the races will take place on Wednesday with the long-distance race. This will be followed by course races, slalom or freestyle, depending on the wind conditions.
Armando Bronzetti, President of the Circolo Surf Torbole, says: "We are delighted with the number of participants, as we have never had so many participants in previous editions in other European countries. The Circolo Surf Torbole is ready to host this beautiful event with more than 200 participants and to bring the spirit of windsurfing that has always characterised the riders of this fun class that represents the history of windsurfing".
"After the World Championship in Australia in December the class is now back on Lake Garda," says Luca Frascari, President of the Italian windsurfing class. "Some of the heroes from their golden years, such as Stephan Van Den Berg and Faustine Merret, are taking part. But it also offers a more affordable option for those who don't have the time or money to dedicate to foil but want to continue racing at a high level. The versatility of this new board is also appreciated by former funboard racers! A great event for all of us and we hope that Lake Garda will host us in all its splendour and with the right wind!"
