Tough conditions, remote spots and a close final: Frida and Emma Miron on their adventure at the Tiree Wave Classic and their double podium finish.

Tiree isn’t exactly round the corner. What made you decide to travel all the way there for the contest?

It was Frida who first suggested the Tiree Wave Classics. She’d seen the photos from last year and we decided that nowhere else probably has conditions quite like those on Tiree. We were particularly drawn to the big waves combined with strong winds. It looked like a real adventure!

What were your impressions of the island, the spots and the atmosphere there?

Even at the ferry terminal in Oban, on the evening of our arrival, everyone was very friendly and keen to find out what had brought the two of us to this part of Scotland. As we set foot on the island, we were given a warm welcome and every car waved at us. It seems as though any change on Tiree attracts attention. When we arrived at the spot, we were greeted straight away by the Maclean family, the organisers of the Tiree Wave Classics, and given insider tips on the best spot and the best wave.

Waves up to 6 metres high and offshore winds of 55 knots – but that’s exactly why we came to Tiree. It really was an adventure!

On On the final day, the conditions were pretty rough, how was it for you? How did you find the day?

The evening before, we were both very excited. Frida had comfortably qualified for the final the day before, but Emma had to swim for a long time in her heat and faced a long road through the repechage rounds on the final day. The forecast for the final day was a tough one: waves up to 6 metres and 55 knots of offshore wind – but that’s exactly why we’d come to Tiree. It really was an adventure! Finding the right moment to head out between the waves and then hitting exactly the right section as we rode in was a real challenge in the high waves and the typical Scottish rainy weather. When we both made it through to the final in the end, we were absolutely delighted. Being out on the water with Izzy Adcock and Cori McFarelane, competing for the best turn and the biggest wave, was truly something special.

In the final, the eventual winner, Izzy Adcock, only overtook you at the very last second. Did you realise out on the water just how close it was?

No, even when we were standing together on the shore for quite a while afterwards, we still didn’t know who’d won, but it didn’t really matter anymore. Each of us had our own moment in the wave, and the fact that it was so close in the end just goes to show that we made the most of the Tiree Wave Classics!

What are your plans for the future, and what are your next goals?

One thing’s for sure: we’ll be back in Tiree next year! This spring, we’ve got the Moulay Wave Classics in Morocco lined up, together with the Sailboards Tarifa team. However, the coming season is going to be a real challenge because Emma’s sitting her A-levels. But we’re always up for an adventure in big waves and special places!

Thank you very much, and I wish you continued success!

His surfing CV includes all the famous choppy water spots: As a teenager, he went from his home in Münsterland to the Ijsselmeer or the Brouwersdam, and during his civilian service on Sylt, after countless washes on the west side, the Königshafen became his preferred spot. After studying in Kiel and Heidkate, he was supposed to go to Hamburg “only for a short time”, but this short time has lasted for over ten years and has made him a “weekend warrior”. He goes on tour with his family and camper van as often as possible, often to the Baltic Sea, SPO or Denmark, but also likes to go to Finland, Sweden or Sardinia.
