The third edition of the Lanzarote Foil Challenge is entering the stand-by phase. As soon as the conditions allow, over 20 foilers will start the nine-hour race around the island.

According to the organisers, the Lanzarote Foil Challenge is the first international ultra regatta with a foil. In around nine hours, participants will cover a distance of 200 kilometres non-stop around the island. A press conference was held yesterday to mark the opening, and the stand-by phase will now run until 6 December to wait for the best conditions.

For safety reasons, the field is limited to around 20 riders, including Nico Prien and Fabian Wolf. Johan Søe, Pierre Mortefon, Hugo Sjöberg, Scotty Stallman, William Huppert and Alexis Mathis are some prominent PWA riders on the entry list. Marion Mortefon, Lena Erdil, Helle Oppedal and Sara Wennekes are registered for the women's race. A number of locals will also be competing. Nicolas Goyard and Lena Erdil won last year, while Mateus Isaac crossed the finish line first the year before.

In six stages around Lanzarote

The Lanzarote Foil Challenge will consist of six individually scored stages. The first stage starts at 8.00 am in the Marina Rubicón and leads up the coast from Janubio to El Golfo. The second stage lasts around two hours and leads to La Santa, from where the third stage starts to La Graciosa, with an estimated arrival time of around 14:00. The finish of the fourth stage is Costa Teguise, from where it continues downwind to Playa Honda. The riders will finish the regatta in Marina Rubicón at around 17:00.

The race is organised by Los Charcos Windsurfing Club together with the Canary Islands Sailing Federation and Marina Rubicón. "This race will be an opportunity to showcase Lanzarote as a water sports destination and promote the tourist value of the island, which in recent years has been chosen by athletes from all over the world to train for international championships and the next Olympic Games in Paris in 2024," hope the representatives of the tourism associations. Various regional authorities, hotels and tourism businesses are also among the supporters.
