Who is Alexia Kiefer?
Her full name is Alexia Kiefer-Quintana - German father, Spanish mother. She lives with her brother Carlos and father Florian where others go on holiday - in Maspalomas on Gran Canaria. In 2018, the then 13-year-old made a name for herself when she won the PWA Youth World Cup in Pozo and Tenerife.

How did you come into contact with windsurfing?

My father was a windsurfing instructor in his younger years. One day he took us to try windsurfing. From then on, we kept going windsurfing.

What fascinated you about windsurfing at the beginning?

The fact that I can go wherever I want on the water, the view from the water and then the speed.

Does the rest of the family surf too?

My father was a windsurfing instructor and he taught the whole family. My mum, my brother and me. Now we sometimes all windsurf together in Pozo Izquierdo.

When and at which spot did you surf for the first time?

I surfed for the first time on a reservoir with very little wind and smooth water during the summer holidays in 2014.

Did you surf the wave straight afterwards?

No, after the reservoir we went to Bahia de Formas, where there are no waves but the same wind as in Pozo. Two years ago, I rode the waves in Vargas and Pozo for the first time.

What do you enjoy most about windsurfing?

I always try to be better, whether I win or lose doesn't matter, I always enjoy it. No two days are the same. I like the big days with the really big waves the most.

Do you enjoy competing with other female windsurfers?

I have a lot of fun when I surf with friends and rivals. Because there is a lot of competition, I always try to be better.

Are there any other girls in your class who windsurf?

There are a few children in my class who windsurf, they are just learning to glide. In my school there are only two boys in total who windsurf in Pozo Izquierdo. One of them is my little brother.

Who are your role models and who do you learn the most from?

Adam Lewis, Victor Fernandez and Sarah-Quita Offringa are my role models. Sarah helps me a lot and gives me tips when we're together. The same goes for Jorge Vera, who surfs with us and shows us new manoeuvres.

Your little brother is already a very good surfer too. Do you push each other or does it annoy you when he can do manoeuvres faster than you?

My brother and I have roughly the same level, but sometimes he can do a manoeuvre faster than me, sometimes the other way round. That helps us a lot because everyone always wants to be better than the other.

You are already sponsored. How did you come to be sponsored at such a young age?

Jonas from POZOWINDS, a shop in Pozo, supports us and helps us a lot, he also introduced us to our current sponsors.

You were born on Gran Canaria and have a German father and a Spanish mother. What contacts do you have with Germany? Do you like Germany?

I think Germany is very beautiful and huge. I also have a lot of friends there who also windsurf and of course a big family through my father. I want to go to Germany more often, but I also want to windsurf in all my free time.

Do you speak Spanish or German with each other?

We almost always speak German with my father, sometimes we switch to Spanish without realising it. I only speak Spanish with my mum, her family and my friends.

What do you think of the PWA Youth World Cups? How do you get on with each other?

I think it's a very good idea that there are PWA Youth World Cups. We have become a big group of friends from all over the world. We keep in touch with each other and will meet up for windsurfing even without the World Cups. We motivate each other, we all want to get better and better and that makes us want to windsurf more and more.

What have been your biggest successes so far?

The first time I took part in a windsurfing competition, I came first in the under 15 category and first under 17 at the PWA Youth Worldcup Wave in Pozo Izquierdo in 2018 at the age of 13. At the PWA Youth Worldcup Wave in Tenerife, I came first in the U15 and second in the U17 category.

What are your goals for this year and for the future?

As I will be taking part in the women's event this year, I want to make a good impression and win my categories again in Pozo Izquierdo and Tenerife. I would like to become world champion in the future
