Jono Dunnett wants to circumnavigate Japan on his windsurfing board and is currently in the north of the island of Hokkaido. But after making great progress in the last few days, there has now been a major setback: the sail and mast have been destroyed after Jono's equipment was caught in a gust on land. "I had hoped for an early start and even said that I had to keep going and make miles before the weather changed, but sometimes life has other plans," Jono wrote on Instagram, posting a picture of his damaged rig.
What had happened? "I had left the board in the boom on top of the sail, and all the gear on top of the sail too, but maybe a gust came from a different direction. The gear was flung into the fence attached (the board still in the boom), and my luggage buoy was drifting in the water towards Russia on its own," he reports. "I ran along the breakwater, hoping to find a place where I could climb back up if I jumped in, but there was no way to get back out of the water. So I ran back to the board, threw it into the water and then paddled like a man possessed to save the barrel and its contents." At least that was successful, now it remains to be seen how quickly Jono can get spare parts to Shari, where he is currently located. But: "Worse things can happen at sea," Jono concludes his post with conciliatory words.
