Philip Köster is fired up for his home match at the World Cup on Sylt: "I feel great, have trained exceptionally well in my adopted home of Gran Canaria and am ready for my third title," he says in a recent press release. "I've expanded my training programme and discovered a new passion that is incredibly good for me. I now also regularly sit on the saddle of my Giant bike and can therefore make the most of the windless time. An absolute added value that makes me much fitter."
Köster has already won on Sylt in 2012 and 2022, and the event is still something special for him: "We have more spectators on Sylt than anywhere else. More than 200,000 fans cheer us on during the event. That pushes me immensely," enthuses Philip. His father Rolf, his wife Manca and their four-year-old daughter Malia are also taking part this year. "I can tell that Philip really wants to win on Sylt. And as we all feel at home on the island, we'll be accompanying him and pushing him forward," says Manca, who has already become world champion on the SUP herself.
The right environment is important for Philip to be able to perform at his best: "When I feel comfortable, I'm much more relaxed, but also more focussed in the competition," he says. This is particularly important on Sylt, which is one of the most difficult spots in the world for Philip with its strong currents and unpredictable conditions. Nevertheless, the anticipation is great: "I have to admit that storms and metre-high waves suit me better than light winds and little swell."
