There were no official competitions on the opening day of the Citroën Windsurf World Cup Sylt 2024, but the conditions were perfect. Even John Carter had already unpacked his camera and was shooting.

Especially in the morning, the riders who had already arrived were able to show what they were capable of: With small sails, wind from the left and a solid swell, Sylt offered conditions that you could only have dreamed of in other years. Many used the day for an extensive warm-up. Not only the wave riders, but also many slalom riders and freestylers went out in the waves.

After registration, the athletes were introduced in the afternoon in the Kurmuschel. By then the wind had died down again, and only Balz Müller and Lennart Neubauer went out on the water again.

We start early on Saturday, as the forecast suggests that it could be the day with the best wave conditions. The skippers' meeting is at 7.30 a.m. and the first possible start is at 8.00 a.m.!

Tobi is our digital man, he looks after the surf website and social media channels and gets on everyone's nerves every morning by asking for more pictures and videos. His surfing CV includes all the famous choppy water spots: As a teenager, he went from his home in Münsterland to the Ijsselmeer or the Brouwersdam, and during his civilian service on Sylt, after countless washes on the west side, the Königshafen became his preferred spot. After studying in Kiel and Heidkate, he was supposed to go to Hamburg “only for a short time”, but this short time has lasted for over ten years and has made him a “weekend warrior”. He goes on tour with his family and camper van as often as possible, often to the Baltic Sea, SPO or Denmark, but also likes to go to Finland, Sweden or Sardinia.
