54 men, 22 women – the field of competitors The line-up at the WWT/PWA World Cup in Tenerife is truly impressive. To whittle the field down to a size suitable for the contest, the Challenger rounds – the qualifying heats for the main field – got underway on the very first day of the event. However, due to the still modest conditions, only a few heats could be held, and the favourites have not yet had to get involved in the action. From a German perspective, two top favourites – Philip Köster and Lina Erpenstein – are on the starting line-up, whilst Maria Behrens even arrived as the World Championship leader following her strong results in Maui (2nd place) and Pozo (5th place). But Julian Salmonn and Anton Richter could also have a say in the outcome, whilst the Maethner brothers and Peter Gobisch are among the newcomers in the starting line-up who are likely to have good chances in the junior rankings.
The wait is likely to come to an end today, as after a few days of light winds, the trade winds are set to pick up again properly as the week goes on.
