Despite all the restrictions and uncertainties caused by corona, the Multivan Windsurf Cup had a very successful season this year. In autumn, the German Windsurfing Association (GWA) has now set the course for a more spectacular and clearer future: By focussing on slalom as the only racing discipline, the entry hurdle to the Multivan Windsurf Cup has been decisively lowered. The slalom format allows participation with significantly less and therefore more common equipment. It is more in line with what "normal windsurfers" do at their home spots, meaning that no extra equipment or expertise is required to enter. In addition, the "Boot Cashback Campaign" will be launched next year together with Messe Düsseldorf. As part of this, all Youth U21 participants will receive a refund of their entry fee when they register. Choppy Water GmbH has already presented the complete 2022 tour schedule so that all cuppers can make the best possible preparations.
Attractive platform for young people
With this tailwind, the Multivan Windsurf Cup will be back in full swing next year. A special focus will be placed on young regatta talent for the top German series. Due to the favourable conditions, numerous people are expected to enter the regatta. Various measures are planned to support this. The Multivan Windsurf Cup is to be further strengthened as a central platform for all young people in the shortboard sector. It does not matter whether the youngsters compete with IFCA slalom boards, form boards, iQFOiL or iQFOiL Youth or Technowindfoil equipment. The Multivan Windsurf Cup is the common platform for all young people and offers them a unique platform with its regattas. In order to focus even more on the young up-and-coming riders, the youth competitions are being expanded. In future, the first to third places in the age categories Youth U21, Youth U19 and Junior U17 will always be honoured at the Multivan Windsurf Cup regattas.
"We already noticed a great deal of interest from young people last year. By focussing on just one racing discipline, it will be much easier to communicate the sport. We had agreed that we wanted to use the space that would become available during the award ceremony to offer the next generation of regatta sailors a more attractive platform. We ensure this by honouring the three age categories U21, U19 and U17 at the Windsurf Cups. In this way, the young up-and-coming riders can compete with each other even better and have good opportunities to showcase themselves to sponsors,says Matthias Regber from Choppy Water GmbH.
Rookie classification for all newcomers to the regatta
But it's not just young up-and-coming talent that will benefit from the new opportunities. Older newcomers to regattas will also be given a platform again in 2022: the rookie ranking no longer made sense following the abolition of the overall ranking. It would have had to be organised separately for each discipline, which would have gone beyond the scope of the competition. By focussing on slalom as the only racing discipline, it makes sense to reintroduce this attractive special ranking. Rookies are regatta beginners in their first competition season. With the rookie classification, all rookies have a common platform on which they can compete with each other. Age does not play a role here. This is where young talents compete with ambitious weekend racers.
"The rookie classification was always a real highlight and a strong motivation - especially for older newcomers to the Multivan Windsurf Cup. We regretted the abolition of this classification in the course of focussing on the individual disciplines and also received many queries about this. We are therefore all the more pleased to bring back the rookie classification. We are excited to see who will be the Rookie of the Year 2022!" says Matthias Regber.
