Test of crossover boards for wings, SUPs and windfoiling: The Starboard Foil X Wing WS in the individual evaluation

X-Wing - in the sense of a crossover between two disciplines - can already be recognised in terms of the boxes and strap options. For windsurfing, the foil is anchored at the very back in a deep tuttle box, while the US boxes run under the board much further forwards. The respective strap positions fit perfectly (photo page 29). In combination with the Starboard Supercruiser foil, the board offers a very sporty feeling when windsurf foiling and maximum control. It goes up and down very predictably, is easy to edge and is the most stable of all the test combos in the air. The loop position is a very good compromise between performance and manoeuvrability. In the event of minor manoeuvring errors, if you get too high, the wing "floats" slightly on the water surface and does not crash abruptly. However, if an unintentional "touch down" should occur, the nose absorbs it well and a lot of volume at the front ensures an immediate rebound and the flight can be continued. Turns are also easy on it. With a volume of 125 litres, the board offers good stability even when bobbing and can also be used well by surfers with less foiling experience. The flight feel is compact, the lift on the foil is maintained for a long time in manoeuvres, as well as in wind holes.

As a wing-foil replacement, the board impresses wing beginners with its generous, even volume distribution and compact dimensions. With the foil mounted at the front, you are very centred and secure in the straps, the foil - now with a small rear wing and short fuselage - remains very easy to control, but becomes more agile and can be pumped properly over the legs. The good flight stability and secure hold tempt you to make your first jumps. Even if the board is too big for radical wing freestyle, as a sporty light wind cruiser it should also be fun for advanced riders and offer plenty of volume reserve for the way home without foil wind.

surf conclusion: A successful mix of manoeuvre and performance for windsurf foiling, plus a very suitable wing beginner board and for wing foil freeriding.

Top control; good strap positions
