The completely newly developed Duotone Ultra FreeWave reveals its ideal area of use with three clear clues: there are three particularly small fins in the tail, the deck has a very flat shape throughout in the stance and movement area and the foot straps can only be mounted in a far inboard position. This gives the board a characteristic that is actually reminiscent of a hybrid between freestyle and wave, with an automatically more upright riding position.
When planing, the Duotone FreeWave is as stable as a freestyle flounder, but it reacts very quickly and clearly to foot control when planing. Not with jagged twitching, but rather with soft wagging. This is perhaps how you imagine the feeling in fresh Canadian powder. The turns are very tight and nimble, which is exactly what makes it so exciting on smaller waves that can be ripped really quickly.
It glides just as quickly and smoothly through tight and medium gybe radii; wide carving is not its strong point. With the small fins, the board glides rather flat over the water, but can be flicked out of the water at any time with a small impulse from the rear ankle: the good "pop" for jumping comes from the freestyle department - and the 60 centimetre wide stride in the straps comes from the wave segment. The glide feeling in the chop is also rather well-behaved, soft and cushioned, the glide position primarily conveys stability and safety.
For full-throttle freeriding on a downwind course, you would wish for a little more ground clearance under the nose - in addition to perhaps a more outward position for the foot straps. However, from classic freestyle tricks to the first slid moves, the new "Ultra" is a very reliable companion.
The name fits perfectly, the Duotone FreeWave offers very good suitability and the right feel for moderate wave riding, bump & jump and (freestyle) manoeuvres. There are more suitable boards for flat water freeriding and wide carving jibes.
