The fat end comes at the tail - we have never seen such a pumped up stance area as on the Severne Dyno in this board class. However, the unusual shape combination of the flat, thinned-out front section and the very domed tail fulfils its purpose: the board is stable and freeriding on the water and also gives a free, fast board feeling in choppy water. The rounded deck supports the turning characteristics.
The planing phase is not brute at first, but the Dyno accelerates properly and then hangs freely on the foot, high above the chop, and in the "unlikely event of abrupt water contact" appears softly cushioned. At the same time, the feet are in a very relaxed position in soft and comfortable straps, just like in a cosy slipper. The fins with their performance-orientated outline take the pressure well even with a powerful 6.0 sail and hold the track securely. In the freeride freemove rating, the Severne Dyno is very close to the very good JP Freestyle Wave.
However, the Dyno does not remain a tame henpecked husband. The domed deck, as on a radical wave board, also facilitates active edging "rail to rail": when you are happily wobbling along on the straight and, of course, during fast, tight turns on the wave. It doesn't quite come close to the super tight turns of a Quatro Power It surfs a bit "rounder", but still so tight that it works very well on moderate waves and is fun to ride.
It is just as easy to steer into the jibe as it is into the bottom turn and then glides surprisingly well through medium and wider radii. Very wide carving jibes are not one of the Severne Dyno's specialities, but from very tight to the classic power jibe, the board "always convinces to the fullest satisfaction", with good guidance and more speed at the exit of the turn than a Quatro or Starboard code. The same applies to the turning ability of a Duotone but offers a dash more freeride characteristics - even with foot straps mounted on the outside when heating up in flat water. The straps positioned far back also allow first-class "pop" for freestyle moves or simply for exuberant, light-footed jumping in choppy water.
The Severne Dyno combines comfortable yet sporty freeriding with good turning characteristics in front of the wave and a good shot of freestyle options. This puts it well ahead in the versatility test.
